Stand-Down To Prevent Falls in Construction: National Campaign Focuses On Reducing Maryland Workers’ Compensation Risks

ConstructionBoots

Fall accidents are common on different worksites and are one of the leading causes of Maryland workers’ compensation claims. Each May, state and national officials focus on ways to reduce the risks. Our Maryland workers’ compensation attorney explains more about the Stand-Down To Prevent Falls in Construction campaign and how to protect yourself on the job site.

 Taking A Stand Against Workplace Falls

Workplace falls are a leading cause of death and disability throughout the country. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), they claim the lives of more than 700 workers each year while leaving over 120,000 others suffering serious personal injuries. Construction workers are most at risk.

In anticipation of the busy summer construction period, the NSC partners with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) to raise fall awareness. Stand-Down To Prevent Falls in Construction is a nationwide event held the second week of May. Tens of thousands of employers and millions of workers have participated in the event since it started in 2012.

The focus is on raising awareness of common fall risks that impact workers on different types of job sites. As part of the program, employers are encouraged to conduct safety inspections and to hold specialized training programs. Tips that can help to prevent work-related fall injuries in Maryland include:

  • Clean up spills and debris on floors as soon as possible;
  • Post warning signs about slippery areas or those undergoing excavations or other construction;
  • Wear the right shoes for your work environment and make sure they have non-slip soles;
  • Use a ladder for reaching tall objects and make sure it is in good condition;
  • When working at heights, make sure the scaffolding is secure;
  • Never attempt to do any type of work at heights without having the proper training first.

Despite taking precautions, fall accidents at work can still happen and may leave you suffering serious personal injuries.
